With an ever expanding variety of products and items being manufactured at a rapid fire pace, the Asia Pacific region continues to dominate the printing and packaging industries internationally. The region is a world leader in terms of packaging the world’s personal care and food products in particular, due to the massive demand for those types of items by its population. As such, companies are channeling their efforts into flexible packaging and rigid plastics as these two segments make up over 80% of the market for personal care packaging. In turn, the market for food label printing has become massive – as it is increasingly difficult to scale the enormous amount and scope of food products being produced in Asia amidst its extensively varied populations as well as their different religions.

As the frequency of printing and packaging in Asia continuously increases, it’s become necessary for companies and governments to become conscious of the effects that so much paper and plastic may have on the environment. This growing concern has led to a boom in green printing, using digital printing to reduce carbon footprints as well as minimize the excessive use of traditional printing solvent. Machines are also being produced to meet a demand for environmental consciousness and safety by decreasing emissions as well as energy consumption. This effort to promote sustainability has in turn given way to the birth of green ink and a heavy focus on the recycling and disposal of printing materials.

The Asia Pacific region in particular also faces the world’s heaviest brand counterfeiting problem. In a bid to ensure authenticity, companies have developed a growing interest in the concept of anti-counterfeit labeling. These labels feature advance technology designed to maximize brand protection through innovative application and printing. Spectra Packaging, of the UK, recently developed the Illuminate fluorescent print method – allowing brands to insert invisible labels on items that can only be revealed when exposed to ultra violet light. Printing have ramped up their efforts in this regard, recognizing just how much business they can draw in by focusing on anti-counterfeit labels as well as personalized ones.
