It was quite a change of life. I had moved to New York City in 1974 and was comfortably perched on the upper east side in the old Yorkville area, surrounded by hundreds of middle European restaurants and shops spanning Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Poland.

It was a vibrant, delicious area that seemed to deliver a new surprise every time I took a walk around the neighborhood.
