Chinese authorities seize 3,200 tons of illegal reprocessed oil

In 2011, the Chinese authorities had seized 'gutter oil', which was made by reprocessing waste oil from restaurants. Another food scandal which surfaced during the year included the addition of cancer-causing clenbuterol to pig feed to produce lean meat.
In response, the country had launched nationwide food safety campaign in August 2011 to curb such illegal practices.
