The vaccine worked extremely well, showing there is a 99-per-cent reduction in bacteria shed in the feces and a 71-per-cent reduction in the proportion of animals shedding. It even caused decreased O157 levels in unvaccinated cattle when they were in pens with vaccinated animals. The vaccine, called Econiche, was commercially approved for use in Canada in 2008.
