Mozambique overtook South Africas banana production in 2012 and according to the FAO, Mozambique produced almost 725,000 tonnes of bananas in 2019 compared to South Africas 405,000 tonnes. The production cycle is quicker in Mozambique, soils are disease-free, the climate is more tropical with warmer soils, and the fruit is larger.
Most of Mozambiques bananas are exported to South African retailers and wholesale markets, with a portion also going to the domestic market.
