FSSAI issues testing notice after reported rotten areca nut smuggling

With reports surfacing of the smuggling of rotten areca nut (commonly referred to as betel nut) into India via Sri Lanka, FSSAI, Indias apex food regulator, has issued a directive stating that now onwards, every consignment of areca/betel nut will be subjected to 100 percent sampling and testing.

The regulator specified that betel/areca nut, which is used in India as supari, shall not be cleared through the risk-based management system. FSSAI has also asked its officials at the importing ports
