African swine fever only affects pigs, hogs and boars in which it causes high mortality. It can be transmitted directly between animals but also in pork products, animal feed or by people. There is no vaccine or treatment for it.
In China, the worlds largest pork producer, new cases of the disease have been detected nearly every day over vast distances, prompting the government to take strict protective measures including a ban on the use of food waste as pig feed.
