Earlier this summer, Escherichia coli infections swept through the United States and Canada, killing five people and sickening more than 200 others.
The outbreak stemmed from a bad batch of romaine lettuce grown in Arizonas Yuma region, according to an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control. The lettuce was contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, a pathogenic strain of bacteria that officials also found in the regions canal water.
