(MHLW) assesses the safety of GMOs in foods, whereas MAFF assesses the safety of GMOs in animal feed. After a GMO application is submitted to MHLW (for food) or MAFF (for animal feed), the relevant ministry requests evaluations from the Cabinet Office, the Food Safety Commission and the investigation group for the GMO. After evaluations are completed, results are announced so that the public can exchange information with the authorities.
