t a growing number of Americans have alcohol-use disorder, a relatively new classification which the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) defines as problem drinking that becomes severe.

In addition, binge drinking is becoming more common and intense, the study found. There has been this cultural shiftpeople are drinking more when they drink, says George Koob, director of the NIAAA, who wasnt directly involved in the study.
