2008, the most deadly of those outbreaks resulted in the deaths of 22 people when cold cuts from Maple Leaf Foods in Toronto, Ontario, were contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes on the companys production line. An investigation found that the design of the facilitys meat slicers rendered them impossible to completely clean.

Ultimately, 57 people were confirmed to have been sickened in the outbreak, and the company paid out $27 million in lawsuit settlements to victims families.
