and the index for meats was especially strong, posting an increase of 2.9% in April, its largest increase since November 2003.
Also finishing higher in April were the indexes for fruits and vegetables, up 0.7%; and dairy and related products, up 0.5%. The dairy index has now increased for six straight months.
The indexes for other food at home and nonalcoholic beverages declined 0.2% and 0.1%, respectively, during the month.
The index for cereals and bakery products was unchanged in April.
