Frugal U.S. consumers make it tough for food companies to raise prices

Hillshire raised the prices on Jimmy Dean sausage and Ball Park hot dogs as retail pork prices hit a record high of $1.99 a pound in March, from $1.40 a pound a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. McDonald's eliminated its dollar menu last year to give it flexibility to raise prices to offset high costs for meat and other ingredients.
