China rounds up beef supplies to satisfy middle-class hunger

Sidestepping Beijing's import curbs, industry sources estimate hundreds of thousands of tonnes of beef from countries such as Brazil and India is being smuggled into China via neighbouring Hong Kong and Vietnam.

The massive, unofficial trade reflects China's hunger for beef. Official imports quadrupled last year, as the growing ranks of the middle class demanded more high-protein food, while the grey market could be more than double that size.
