Brazil retail surprises with July surge at supermarkets

Brazilian retail sales jumpedmore than expected in July as lower food prices offered relieffor tight family budgets, bolstering hopes that the economy canavoid a quarterly drop.

Sales volumes in Brazil rose a seasonally adjusted 1.9percent in July from June, the government statisticsagency IBGE said on Thursday, well above a median forecast of a0.2 percent rise.
