Symptoms of a Shigella infection appear 1-3 days after exposure to the bacteria, and include stomach cramps, fever and diarrhea - which can contain blood or mucus.
Mogle advises people experiencing these symptoms to contact their healthcare provider, who will likely take a stool sample to test for the pathogen
