Net income fell to $1.03 billion, or $1.11 per share, in the second quarter, compared with $1.17 billion, or $1.23 per share, in the year-ago period.

Excluding pension charges and other one-time items, the company posted profit of $1.28 per share. By that measure, analysts expected earnings of $1.27 per share.
