FDA and FSIS funding set to be cut after bill approved

A decrease in funding for the US Department of Agricultures (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) isalso likely under the fiscal year 2013 Agriculture Appropriations bill.

The budget proposal, which will fund operations between 1 October 2012 and 31 September 2013, was approved yesterday by the US House Appropriations Subcommittee.

Under the bill, the FDA will receive a total of $2.5bn in discretionary funding - topped-up to $3.8bnthrough industry user fees.
