The results from the Japanese trial and others can be explained by the fact that vitamin D promotes theproduction of antibacterial peptides which are involved in innate immunity against various infections,according to a study in Nature. Observational studies have shown people with low serum vitamin D wereat higher risk for influenza and other viral infections.
