FAO Food Price Index Down Seven per cent in 2012

The FAO Food Price Index dropped for the third consecutive month in December 2012, edging down 1.1 per cent.

The decline in December, when the Index averaged 209 points, was led by drops in the international prices of major cereals and oils and fats. The Indexs previous low in 2012 was in June, at 200 points.

For 2012 as a whole, the Index averaged 212, that is, 7.0 per cent less than in 2011, with the sharpest falls year-on-year registered by sugar (17.1 per cent), dairy products (14.5 per c
